Grammar FAQ
How many grammar patterns are on the JLPT?
JLPT doesn't publish official grammar lists post-2010. This list curates 723 patterns across N1–N5 based on the consensus syllabus used by major textbooks (新完全マスター, Try!, So-matome, Bunpro).
How is grammar different from vocabulary?
Vocabulary is what words mean; grammar is how they connect. Patterns like 〜について (about), 〜たところ (just did), 〜にしては (considering) carry meaning AND have attachment rules — they must follow specific word forms.
Why do many patterns feel similar?
JLPT loves testing nuance. ので vs から, のに vs けど, ために vs ように — same English translation, different feel. Each pattern card cross-references similar ones so you learn the differences alongside the meaning.
Can I practice these with spaced repetition?
Yes. Click any pattern to expand, then "Practice" to queue it. Or use the level filter and hit the green button — visible patterns enter the SRS queue. Progress is saved in your browser; sign in to sync across devices.
